About SteGriff.co.uk

"Now with actual information!"

In Dar Beginning

The site started as a personal site for my online persona. (Ste The Fluffy)
Mainly a comical site, it was hosted on Free.Prohosting who I still think are the best free web providers.
I've always written the site in pure (X)HTML and never used MS Frontpage or anything like that.

The co.nr Days

The original site had a text link for each different page under the banner. It soon got very crowded up there. So, I made a navigation bar on the left using a table. That was a mistake: whenever I wanted to add a new page to the site, I had to change the navigation bar on each page individually, which was a big task. Around this time, I registered the domain Rodent.co.nr which was much easier to remember than stegriff.white.prohosting.com

The site moved to 1&1 Webhosts, paid for by my very generous brother, Daryl.
That meant no compulsory adverts, nice domain to remember, loads of storage, and I could host the programs I made.
However, because of the way the old site was done, I had to redesign it when it moved. This time, I made the navigation bar a seperate frame to the main page. This meant I only had to change the page Nav.htm which was much easier... but the site was hard to get indexed by Search Engines, and I couldn't give out links to individual pages, because the navbar wouldn't appear.
I re-did most of the graphics at one point, but the site was still forming...

Still under 1&1 Webhosts, the site was redesigned to the current type of layout to make it look less childish, and meet modern web standards. To solve the Navbar problem, pages were categorized under hubs, meaning I only have to change 1 page when I add a new item. The colour scheme changed from Blue to 'Lemon and Lime'.
All pages, code, styling and graphics are rebuilt. I expected to keep the styling until December 2008: "I'll hang on to this layout for a while, change some of the graphics now and then, and maybe the colour scheme.".
I didn't

So I made this new style, pretty much on a whim. It has many, many advantages in terms of styling (25 lines of code using tables optimised to 5 with CSS), and also conforms with ever changing web standards.
One of my goals is to keep up with the internet; Mr. Berners-Lee keeps making new rules, for a better web. I'll play my part by making this site conform as far as possible.

What are web standards?

Web standards are guidelines set out by the World Wide Web Consortium (the W3C) about how to write correct and efficient web markup and styling. They offer a validation service which tells you whether or not your code is correct according to these guidelines. The idea is that all web pages will display beautifully and perfectly in any web browser, and any resolution of screen.

I agree with this ethos, and write my website to be totally versatile.
